Wealth management glossary: Regulation

The insurance agent (IA) is a professional authorized to distribute insurance contracts on behalf of an insurance company, a broker or another intermediary.

The Regulation category brings together all legal and regulatory rules governing financial activities, markets, and wealth management professionals. Behind every reporting obligation, every transparency requirement, or every compliance procedure, there is a precise regulatory framework designed to protect investors and ensure the stability of the financial system.
Financial regulation covers a broad scope: product distribution rules, disclosure obligations, prevention of conflicts of interest, anti-money laundering, prudential requirements, corporate governance, and the regulation of ESG practices. From European texts such as MiFID, PRIIPs, SFDR or the CSRD Directive to national provisions overseen by the AMF or the ACPR, the regulatory landscape is dense and constantly evolving.
For wealth management professionals, regulation is not a secondary constraint: it shapes the very practice of the profession. It imposes procedures, formalizes client relationships, and strengthens the traceability of the advice provided. It also helps professionalize the sector and establish a lasting climate of trust.
For investors, regulation is a safety net. It aims to improve product transparency, regulate sales practices, and limit abuses. However, it can also make the financial environment more complex and make certain steps more technical.
Understanding regulation means understanding the framework in which markets and participants operate. It means identifying the obligations, responsibilities, and legal risks associated with each decision. In an increasingly sophisticated financial world, mastering the regulatory framework has become an essential component of any robust wealth strategy.
