What is a CIF?
A CIF, or Financial Investment Adviser, is a professional authorised to advise on financial instruments and investment services. This regulated status enables support for individuals, business owners and investors in their financial and wealth decisions.
A CIF operates within a strict framework defined by the French Monetary and Financial Code. Their aim is to help clients select investment solutions suited to their circumstances, objectives and risk profile.
CIF status is frequently used by wealth management advisers, financial advisory firms and certain organisations specialising in investor support.

They serve more than 2,37 million clients, including 525 478 in their capacity as CIFs. The 50 largest firms alone account for 50 % of revenue in the profession.
What does a Financial Investment Adviser do?
A CIF mainly works with financial investments, analysing the client's situation to make personalised recommendations on different investment types.
They may advise on:
- shares;
- bonds;
- UCITS and investment funds ;
- the ETF ;
- policies forlife insurance policy ;
- the Retirement Savings Plans (PER);
- certain structured products ;
- other financial investments permitted by regulations.
Their role is to build a coherent strategy considering return objectives, investment horizon and the client's accepted risk level.
Who can practise as a CIF?
To practise as a CIF, a professional must meet competence and good-repute requirements.
They must demonstrate sufficient qualifications or professional experience, take out professional indemnity insurance and join a professional association approved by the Autorité des marchés financiers.
The adviser must also be entered in the single register maintained byORIAS.
This registration lets individuals check that the professional holds the authorisations required for their activity.
What regulatory obligations apply to a CIF?
CIF activity is strictly regulated to protect investors.
Before giving advice, the professional must collect information about the client to assess their financial knowledge, wealth situation, objectives and risk tolerance.
The CIF must also be transparent about remuneration, any links with financial institutions and the features of recommended products.
Each recommendation must be justified and documented to demonstrate that it serves the client's interests.
How does a CIF differ from a wealth management adviser?
These concepts are often associated but are not identical.
“Wealth management adviser” describes a profession or broad activity covering taxation, retirement, wealth transfer, property, protection insurance and financial investments.
CIF status is a specific regulatory authorisation to provide financial investment advice.
A wealth management adviser may be a CIF and also hold complementary statuses such as insurance broker, banking intermediary or estate agent.
Why check a professional's CIF status?
Checking that a professional is registered as a CIF is essential before any investment decision.
This check ensures the adviser is subject to supervision, competence and investor protection rules under French regulations.
Information on the professional's authorisations can be consulted directly in the ORIAS register.
This transparency strengthens trust between adviser and client.
Should you consult a CIF?
